My Vision
My name is Joshua Brown, and I’m the working class candidate for Shasta Union Elementary School Board. I’ve lived my life in Shasta County, and went to Shasta Union Elementary. I have autism and OCD and my experience in the special education and mental health systems give me a unique perspective. I’ve lobbied legislatures on behalf of Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) and labor unions and I am now running for elected office. Read my ten-point program below:
1. DEMOCRATIZE PUBLIC EDUCATION: Students, parents, workers, and communities should have more of a say as to how our public school is run, not disconnected politicians. The recent move to reduce the number of school board members from 5 to 3 was a mistake.
2. OPPOSE CUTS TO PUBLIC EDUCATION: We should not have to live a life of austerity, and as such I am opposed to privatization and chartering. I want to restore Special Needs classes as an option for students who need help navigating the campus, teachers, and students.
3. SPECIAL EDUCATION BILL OF RIGHTS: I want to aim to increase the recruitment of Special Education teachers. I want to give students the appropriate resources to meet students’ IEP and Transition Goals.
4. DIGNITY FOR EDUCATION WORKERS: Pay all teachers a living wage and pay for it by cutting administrative costs.
5. END THE SCHOOL TO PRISON PIPELINE: Police and Security Officers are a vital public service, but they shouldn’t be doing the work of Behaviorists on School Grounds.
6. GRADING FOR EQUITY: Some students are disabled, some are abled, some read at a 1st grade level, some read at a 3rd or 4th grade level. There is no one-size-fits-all, so Common Core and standardized testing needs a bit of reform.
7. UNIVERSAL CHILDCARE: Get every student the healthcare they need in times of Covid-19. Struggle with the county Board of Education to achieve state-run preschool, and with the State Legislature to achieve single-payer healthcare in California.
8. DE-PROPAGANDIZE THE CURRICULUM: The curriculum shouldn’t be the propaganda of the 1%, students should not be taught that they’re just a number on a payroll, a raw resource there for exploitation. Oppose exploitation of social issues by both sides to further divide the population. Reject the culture war, and work for students regardless of politics.
9. IMPROVE TESTING AND GRADING: We should also be improving the curriculum- teaching math, science, language arts, reading, writing, computers, etc., and grading accurately.
10. SCHOOL LUNCHES: Education needs to be integrated into a total system of eliminating poverty. As a first step, kids need to eat well, and should not be coming to school fed the kind of food that is inflicted on low-income communities. Increase organic standards.
